Description
This magnificent specimen of a Texas Palmetto is in the interior garden of the Alamo (originally named the Mision San Antonio de Valero) in San Antonio, Texas.
People usually think of Palms as a more tropical plant - but this species (also known as the Rio Grande palmetto, Mexican palmetto, Texas sabal palm, or
palma de macharos) is native to the area. While Florida and South Carolina have the Sabal Palmetto as their official state tree, Texas chose differently and instead selected the Pecan tree.
The trimmed leaves of the Palmetto Palm leave behind a layered crisscross pattern that are referred to as "boots". (referring to the form of any single leaf base, because its shape is very much like that of a bootjack, the device used to remove tall riding boots.)
Poem about a Palm Tree
Wadi Lau I, by Rossend Bonas Miro
Sota les palmeres de fulles remoroses
voldrem desxifrar el missatge del vent.
I a laigua de les squies, silenciosa,
espurnes de llum treu la lluna creixent.
(English translation)
Under the palm trees murmuring leaves
we try to discern the winds message
And from the silent water pools
sparks of light engender the rising moonn
